Telford Town Centre Regeneration
Earlier in 2004 English Partnerships and The Borough of Telford & Wrekin commissioned a team of experts led by urban design specialists Gillespies to assist with establishing Development Control Guidance for the future development of Telford Town Centre over the next 20 years.
The overall aim is to transform Telford Town Centre into a progressive, vibrant and contemporary place to live and work. The central objective is to give Telford a new heart, providing the town with a new cluster of retail, commercial, leisure and evening entertainment facilities. In addition, a cultural and entertainment focus in the Southwater area with spaces for theatre, cinema and the arts, while new office and retail developments will provide additional employment opportunities, stimulate property development and help develop the local economy.
In July 2004 a public consultation was held in Telford Shopping Centre to gain valuable feedback on how local people would like to see the town centre develop, looking at ways of integrating a more pedestrian friendly environment with a less car dependent centre, a vibrant night time economy and introducing mixed use development within the centre.
The Council is seeking to adopt the guidance in November 2004 and will be encouraging operators and developers to invest in the Town Centre and put forward proposals for future development.
