Background

Northstowe will be a sustainable new town built on former RAF barracks about 5 miles from the centre of Cambridge.

English Partnerships acquired the site in 2006 from Defence Estates. This land, together with adjoining sites will form the new town.

Located in South Cambridgeshire, in an area identified in the Sustainable Communities Plan as a growth area, this project will make best use of both previously developed land and surplus public sector land.

The site will accommodate around 9,500 homes alongside around 140,00 sqm of employment floorspace and substantial educational and leisure provision.

Northstowe aims to be “a model for sustainable living”, protecting and enhancing the natural and built environment, a low ecological footprint, high quality open space and built environment with sustainable energy production and usage to achieve reductions in emissions.

English Partnerships is working closely with the key stakeholders and the local delivery vehicle in the area to progress this unique project.

Key Northstowe facts and figures

  • 9,500 homes
  • 24,000 residents
  • 427 hectares of land
  • 1 town centre
  • Local centres to serve local neighbourhoods
  • 1 secondary school
  • 6 primary schools
  • 148 hectares of open space (one third of total)
  • 2 main employment areas
  • 3 sports hubs
  • Over 20 children’s play areas

Northstowe location

The Northstowe site lies five miles north west of Cambridge, on the former Oakington Barracks airfield and on adjacent land to the east of Longstanton and to the east of Oakington.

The site is contained to the north and east by the Cambridgeshire Guided Bus, which will travel along the route of the disused railway line from St Ives to Cambridge.

Developing a brownfield site, to ensure the best possible use of available land and to reduce pressure on greenfield land, is in line with government policy.
