Avenue

The Avenue project aims to regenerate the site of the former Avenue Coking Works, near Chesterfield. The 98 ha former Coking Works is the largest single project which falls under English Partnerships’ National Coalfields Programme.

Avenue Coking WorksSite plans

The site will be partly designed to protect approximately 800 properties in Chesterfield from flooding.

Three quarters of the site will become open space available for recreational facilities and wildlife habitats. The remaining quarter of the site is designated for mixed use redevelopment.

Remediation

A planning application was submitted for the remediation of the site to Derbyshire County Council in 2007. The cleaning up of the Avenue site will be one of the largest applications of new remediation technologies in Europe and lead to innovative sustainable brownfield regeneration.

The various options for the project are being examined before the final remediation project of this site is undertaken.

The project will take around five years (including the planting of the site) and is programmed to end in 2013.

Contractor

Remediation contractor VSD Avenue, a consortium consisting of Volker Stevin, DEC and Sita Remediation was appointed in 2006 as preferred contractor for the Avenue regeneration. Their purpose is to design the most effective processes to treat gross contamination of the land following the coke and chemical production between 1956 and 1992.
